Realism without Mirrors

چکیده
Contemporary pragmatists, especially those who follow Richard Rorty’s lead, have contested the philosophical paradigm they have referred to as ‘representationalism’: the idea that our claims or beliefs describe or are ‘about’ the world. These ‘new pragmatists’ have often been seen to be in an antagonistic relationship with their antecedents, the pragmatists of the turn of the 20th century: these ‘classical pragmatists’ advanced at least moderate forms of realism, towards which the non-representationalist position is taken to be hostile. A case in point is Charles S. Peirce, who proposed that our beliefs are to be fixed by the scientific method which entails an assumption of an independent reality which those beliefs may accord with. I argue that the views of the classical pragmatists are amenable to an expressivist and non-representationalist interpretation. The prevalent assumption that this cannot be the case is due to the received wisdom that realism entails representationalism. But for Peirce, the scientific method and its commitment to what I will refer to as hypothetical realism is not derived from a robust notion of representation. As such it is fully compatible with the non-representationalist view: it is a realism without representationalism. I will further show that this position enables us to reconceptualize different brands of realism, such as normative realism.

Characteristic of P-type AlAs/GaAs Bragg Mirrors Grown by MBE on (100) and (311)A Oriented Substrates
P-type GaAs/AlAs distributed Bragg mirrors have been grown using molecular beam epitaxy on (100) and (311)A GaAs substrates in a similar conditions. A comparison of I-V measurements shows that the resistance of the ungraded mirrors grown on the (311)A substrate is 35 times lower than those grown on the (100) substrate with similar structure. The effective barrier heights for both (311 )A and (1...

Objective: Surface coating of dental mirrors using nanotechnology has been done to render them self-cleaning properties. Nano-scaled titanium dioxide particles (TiO2)show antimicrobial properties when exposed to ultra-violet (UV) light. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface coating of dental mirrors with nano titanium dioxide on their self-cleaning (from dentists’ perspe...

The simulation models used in mobile ad hoc network research have been criticised for lack of realism. While credited with ease of understanding and implementation, they are often based on theoretical models, rather than real world observations. Criticisms have centred on radio propagation or mobility models. In this work, we take an integrated approach to modelling the real world that underlie...

متن کاملMirror covered tunnel phototherapy increases the efficacy of phototherapy for neonatal jaundice
Objective: Neonatal jaundice (NJ) is one of the most common cause of neonatal hospital admission. Phototherapy is the main therapy for hyperbilirubinemia of neonatal jaundice. The efficacy of phototherapy depends on the dose and wavelength of light used and the surface area exposed. We increased photons in mirror covered tunnel phototherapy (MCTP) by putting mirrors behind...
